With love from Bamako – the African Bench!

When I listened to my first CD of “Amadou & Mariam” – a blind couple from Mali – I was very moved and started some research on this West African country. Pictures brought the bustling city in Timbuktu and Bamako, the exciting fishing port and markets in Mopti and most important, the vast Sahara desert with its wonderful shapes and colours, to life.

Inspired by the music and the pictures of Mali I went searching for fabrics from this amazing corner of the world to use with my bespoke furniture and came across some stunning textiles with their distinct African patterns and colours.

One of them I used to design my African Bench;

Bespoke Furniture - African Bench

It is handcrafted from reclaimed sustainable ply wood which I painted in a light black colour with blue edges. I have used the fabric with its amazing hand woven pattern as the top inlay and resined it with a water based lacquer. To make this piece of furniture a bit more playful the legs of the bench are decorated with blue glass beads that correspond superbly with both the blue edges as well as the fabric.

With its size of 140 x 50 x 43 cm and being lightweight, the African Bench is very versatile and can be moved around easily. The idea behind my design was its use in living rooms, kitchens, hallways or bedrooms as either decorative or functional furniture. Use the handmade table as a sitting bench, transform it quickly into a coffee table or just enjoy it as a beautiful decorative addition to your house.
So why not listen to a bit of “Amadou & Mariam”, sit down on the African Bench and invite a bit of Africa into your home!

Launch of bespoke furniture commission ‘Hector’

Living in Cornwall I come across very small living spaces that cry out for inventive solutions to create more storage space. Think about all those beautiful but tiny cottages dotted across the Cornish landscape…

The Hector shelving unit was born following a request for bespoke stand-alone shelves.

Made from sustainable wood in combination with metal parts it has a rustic and unique look that is still able to blend with existing furniture. This versatile bespoke furniture piece would fit in literally every room with its compact dimensions of 140 x 60 x 40cm.

  • Think BATHROOM storage space for soaps, towels, shower gel, shampoo … or just the odd rubber duck
  • Think KITCHEN always an issue in my own kitchen and for every passionate home chef is where to put all the spices, pulses, pasta – with the Hector shelf you can create a colourful display
  • Think NURSERY easy access for your little ones to reach their teddy, puzzles, books etc

The Hector is easy to move around and it is accessible from all four sides. It can be positioned anywhere in the room.

Now we can say ‘we have unique art for sale’!

Welcome.

Unique art for sale at Tomas & Jani

This is the new Tomas & Jani Bespoke Furniture website and I have to say, I’m rather proud of it.  I felt it was time to properly showcase all the wonderful projects my team and I have worked on over the years and simultaneously be able to show which items we have in stock available for purchase.  Without sounding like I’m doing a film awards acceptance speech, I would just like to thank Rachael of Marketing Professional who has managed the whole project for me and will continue to help me look after the site and also my friend Georgi who knows the business very well and has helped out with the words.  Thank you.

Do take a look through the new Items in Stock area to see the pieces of handmade furniture for sale and the various unique art for sale, there are some reduced price items.

My aim is to write on here regularly about the projects I’m working on and any interesting news.  I’d also be happy to answer any questions you might have about furniture design, apprenticeships or project ideas.  I’m based in Cornwall but I take on work further afield, especially furniture, accessories and artwork briefs, so do get in touch.

Thanks for visiting my new website!
